
Queen Latifah was born Dana Elaine Owens on March 18th, 1970 in Newark, New Jersey. The second child of Lance and Rita Owens, Latifah is most well-known for her public speaking skills, social politics and a talent for rhyme. When she was 8 years old her Muslim cousin named her Latifah which means "delicate" and "sensitive" in Arabic. Latifah sang in the choir of the Shiloh Baptist Church located in Bloomfield, New Jersey. Her first public performance when she sang "Home" as one of two Dorothys in a production of The Wizard of Oz.
